TIFF16 – My Reviews

Published September 18, 2016 by lorimuma

Over the past 10 years or so I have attended the Toronto International Film Festival, I had been lucky enough to have seen some wonderful films, however the last couple of years I have been either disappointed with the process, the films or the lack of people involved in films attending. This year was my deciding year if I was going to continue attending. Not happy with my selection time or process I was on the fence.

I have to say this year saved my from jumping ship. I either loved or enjoyed my 7 movies that I attended this year. So much so, that it was hard to come up with my ranking list. So hear are my reviews and impressions of the seven movies I was lucky enough to see.

  1. La La Land
  2. Mascots
  3. Blue Jay
  4. Lion
  5. Before The Flood
  6. Barry

A special mention for my 7th TIFF movie, Justin Timberlake & The Tennessee Kids
1) La La Land. Just announced as the TIFF Peoples Choice winner for 2016, I was so glad that I was able to see this movie before it opens in December. A last minute addition, I picked up this movie the day before as another screening due to demand was announced.
The movie stars Ryan Gosling as a jazz pianist and Emma Stone as an actress in Los Angeles. They have perfect chemistry together. It is directed by Damien Chazelle who also directed Whiplash.
After a couple of  chance meetings they begin a romance. La La Land is being called a modern day musical. Now it is a musical, but I don’t want this to turn people off of it (I personally love Musicals so I may seem a bit bias)
This is not your broadway type musical where the whole movie is one big song. No the this is more along the lines of a Hollywood musical from the 40’s.
I loved the story, the costumes , the entire style of the movie and of course the music. The entire movie I had a smile on my face even during the last scene which also brought out a few tears.
This is a movie that I will being going to see again when it comes out to a wide release in December.

2) Mascots. This is the movie that I wanted to see the most when the films were announced. It ended up being the last movie I saw on the final Saturday night. One of my favourite movies of all time is Best In Show. So I always always look forward to seeing anything that Christopher Guest and cast of great improv actors come up with. This one was no Best In Show, but it wasn’t A Mighty Wind either, so it was a quite enjoyable movie. It is the mockumentary about the World Mascot competition and who will get the Gold Fluffy Award. The usual cast is here. Jane Lynch,Jennifer Coolidge, Bob Balaban, Ed Begley, Jr, Chris O’Dowd, Parker Posey, and of course Fred Willard. They are all incredibly funny and I can’t wait to see this one again, for those subtle jokes that you miss the first time

This movie will be skipping any sort of theatrical release and going straight to Netflix in October. I highly recommend it

3) Blue Jay. Firstly this not a documentary about the Toronto Blue Jays like my friend originally thought, it is actually the furthest thing from it. Like Mascots this is another movie that is going straight to Netflix at the end of the year. This movie stars only two actors Mark Duplass and Sarah Paulson and it is shot entirely in black and white. It is about two people who meet up unexpectedly in a grocery store and then spending the next 24 hours together. Well written and acted, this was a bit of a surprise for me how much I enjoyed it as well a twist scene in that last 20 minutes makes this film thought provoking about a misunderstanding and age can change the outcomes of your life.

Look for it on Netflix at the end of 2016

4) Lion. Lion was one of the most talked about movies at TIFF, and I was able to get an extra showing for it. I had heard that it was the tearjerker of the festival. Is it bad that I didn’t shed a tear, maybe but I blame it on the fact that I already knew the story. It stars Dev Patel ,Nicole Kidman and I think a forgetabble Rooney Mara. Patel plays Saroo Khan who at 5 years old becomes lost and homeless in a strange city, only later to be adopted by an Australian couple. The movie is based on a true story about how Saroo used the then new Goggle Earth to figure out what really happened to him. The movie of rm e was a little long, but I am sure this will be front and centre at the upcoming awards shows.

This movie is worth a look for sure.

5) Before the Flood. This the big Leo climate change save the world documentary. Also it was my first movie of TIFF.

I am pretty sure the main reason that Leo stars in this, is not that he is passionate about climate change (he is). It is to get people to watch it.  We get to see Leo travel the world in hope of finding answers to how we can help protect the world we live in. Over the 90+ minutes we are giving a stunning visuals of  the Alberta tar sands, how Miami Beach is going to be lost under water, to what is becoming the lack of forests being destroyed.

This documentary is definitely worth a watch, yet I have to say Leo is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

6) Barry

I put this movie last in my ranking. Not necessary because it was bad, mainly because it was just ok. There was nothing really wrong with it at all, but it’s not really that memorable.   Lately there have been a few movies based on some part of Barack Obama’s life. This one takes when a then 20 year old Barry moves to New York City. It offers an insight into is life as an university student. The mistakes he makes and trying to figure out what he should be doing.

The actor who plays “Barry” is Devon Terrell is spot on with his Obama impression. The rest of the movie is worth a watch on Netflix,  but I am not sure if I would pay money to see it a theater.

7) Justin Timberlake and The Tennessee Kids . I am not actually sure why this was at TIFF, but it was fine with me. I am giving this special mention, because it was more an event than a movie. The event would be his 20/20 Experience tour , which I was very lucky to have seen all three times is came to Toronto. This was his Jonathan Demme directed concert film. For those looking to see a Truth or Dare style concert documentary you will be disappointed. This is only his concert performed on the final 2 dates in Las Vegas. While this is third movie that I saw going straight to Netflix in October it seems the most obvious one to go that route.

This screening was showing in the Imax theatre. At that time we learned that originally it was to filmed and screened in Imax prior the Netflix deal. My audience would be the only audience in the world to see this concert as it was intended to viewed. Trust me I felt like I was back at the show, and at times I forgot I was in a theatre and almost started to sing along. This is a must watch for any Timberlake fan and I can’t wait to see it again next month.

My Tragically Hip Memory

Published August 10, 2016 by lorimuma

Tonight The Tragically Hip start a 3 night stand at the Air Canada Centre.  This will mark the end of an incredible (and tragic) journey for the iconic Canadian band.

I will probably shouldn’t admit this, but I am probably the first, and perhaps only person in Canada to admit it, but I have never really been a “fan” of the Hip. They were not the soundtrack to my life.  If I were to name a band in my 20’s that was my soundtrack , it would probably be Oasis. As for Canadian artist,  that would go to Alanis Morrissette, but that is not the point of this post. I can respect the fan devotion that many feel.

Yet for some reason  even after that, I have seem the Hip live at least 6 times that I can remember. even writing that I know how lucky I am to say that.

One of those concerts that I will always remember – December 31st 1999.

The Hip were playing the big Y2K concert at the Air Canada Centre. I was lucky enough to be working at the arena in the Air Canada Club at the time.  When everyone was making plans on what to do before the world came to a crashing halt at the change of the century I already had my plans. Working the Hip show in the Air Canada Club. Again I realize how lucky I was as I am writing this.

The great thing about that club was that you have a direct view of all the shows. So most of the guests went to there seats before the show started.  Once the lights went down  and with some “pops” in one hand I had what seemed like a private concert as the we rang in 2000.  I don’t remember the set list, I don’t even what I ate, or how the show ended. What I do remember was the great people I watched the show with. We danced, laughed and made toasts to the years ahead.  Sixteen years later, that remains my favourite new years eve.

So that is my Tragically Hip memory.  Its not long and dramatic. Or probably even that interesting to most people. But for me this is a memory that I will always have. So for that I am thankful to the Tragically  Hip.

Beyonce- The Formation Tour

Published June 4, 2016 by lorimuma

Beyonce bought her Formation Tour to the Rogers Centre this week and I was one of the almost 50,000 that were able to see her.

This wasn’t my first time at seeing Queen Bey,it would be my 3rd but it was her first stand alone show of stadiums.

Now unlike Justin Bieber, whom I had just seen 6 days earlier, I had very high expectations for The Formation Tour.  I had been listening to Lemonade non-stop since it was released earlier in the month and had been reading about the incredible set design of this show.

After reading for days about the incredible staging of this show,it really was more spectacular in person.

The show started a little late at around 9:15, Queen Bey started out with a bang with Formation. I have to admit this is currently one of my favourite songs this year.

Not only did this show well go past my exceptions, it is probably on of the best concerts I have see in the last few year.

Beyonce was on point this night, her singing was great, her dancing was amazing ( I will get back to that) her wind machines were next level and Beyonce has no time for pants on this tour. Pants to her are what a smile is to Justin Bieber, what’s the point.

It was a a two hour spectacle that even included a pool of water at the end on the B stage, where Beyonce and her dancers stomped and danced in bare feet and shin deep water.

Now one of things I have always been a bit critical of Beyonce was her dancing. Not that it is not good,  its fantastic, but it is literally the identical choreography even time she sings certain songs. Crazy in Love, it exactly what she did in the video ten plus years ago, Single Ladies, yes we know what she is going to do. End of Time, yup same choreography as the Super Bowl and the last 3 concerts.  In this show same thing, some of the dancing was right from the the On The Run tour of tour years ago (Bow Down and Ring the Alarm for example). But this time I didn’t care at all, everything else about the show was so fantastic that it didn’t matter.

The other thing about a Beyonce show. Her Wind Machines.  How important are they to the show? They are the 2nd most important part of the whole show.

It goes

  1. Beyonce
  2. Beyonce Wind Machines
  3. the rest of the band/dancers

They don’t let her sweat, they don’t let her hair get her mouth, they make sure the wind is in the exact direction that it needs to be and with what like at lest 100 on the stage, I am surprised Toronto Hydro kept up.

Beyonce and her massive stage @rogerscentre

I can’t  even compare this show to Justin at all. This was on a different level. Beyonce really set herself apart from the rest that night. The more days away from the show, the more I wish I could see it again. Now I just have to hope for a HBO broadcast of The Formation tour. One that HBO Canada would actually air live this time.

Justin Bieber – Toronto

Published June 1, 2016 by lorimuma

I know this is late, but better late than never right?
Last week I was giving a chance to see two much talked about concerts in Toronto. The Biebs and Queen Bey .

Both shows were sold out and both left 2 different impressions on me.
This post will talk about the first show I saw, Justin Bieber The Purpose World tour.

I went to not really having too high of expectations, as I am far from being a “Belieber” He has some catchy songs, and from what I was hearing this show was high on production value.

I will admit the show started out strong, with the “Where r u now”. Justin danced, Justin sang (we will get to that later) but want Justin didn’t do, so any sort of emotion at all.

After a few decent songs, the show seemed to lose steam. Although the sound was great, Justin looked like he was hating every single minute on the stage. He didn’t smile once, not even a grin. Nothing. My god he even had a trampoline come down from the ceiling. Nothing. No smile.

With showing zero emotion, he must have been concentrating on remembering all the words to his songs right? Well when during your show you can actually drop the mic and still not miss a note you have other things going on. Let’s give credit to the sound team on this tour, because it was very clear at times that Justin, was just too bored to open is mouth.

The crowd made up of mostly 20 something women seemed to enjoy the show, and based on the insane lines at the merch counters they wanted an overpriced t-shirt from the night as well.

The Biebs finished the night with Sorry as water fell from the roof, (still no sound of any water on the mic) but the audience (minus me) sang right along.

Oscars 2016 Red Carpet – The Good , The Bad & The Ugly Pre-show edition

Published February 29, 2016 by lorimuma

So it’s that time of year. The time I start watching the Academy Awards and about 30 minutes in I start to wonder why I do this to myself. This year is no different.

I started watching the E on the red Carpet to see all the best and worst of Oscar fashion.

Now I am not a fashion expert at all, so I just look at the gowns for what they are. Either I like them or I don’t. I doesn’t matter if it took 10 months and 200 people to make it, or they got it off the rack.

Now here are my picks for the best.

CcVoTnKUkAALo31.jpg-large

The Good -Mindy Kaling, some people hated it, but I loved the way she looked and she remains one of my favourites. Also I loved her makeup and hair

CcV0OWkUkAAeFor.jpg-large

The Ugly -What the hell is this trying to be. I am at a loss for how bad this is Heidi. You are a supermodel I have no idea why you continue to look so bad on the red carpet.

CcV2bjYUcAEFAeb.jpg-large

The Bad-Liked the colour, and…… well she won so that is a plus. I thought the belt look ridiculous

CcV2RkhW4AAM7Pq.jpg-large

The Bad & Ugly – I read that this dress cost a lot of money. Her shoes reminded me of those platform flip flops that women wear to the mall in the summer. I have nothing else to say about this white tablecloth.

The Good(ish)- It was like they had extra black fabric and decided to make two dress out of it. I like them both, but have seem them look better

CcV94amVIAEp9UI.jpg-large

The Good- I probably would have gone with a different top, I loved this look and thought it worked perfectly on Lady Gaga

CcV8PIgUkAAMzG_.jpg-large

The Bad- This hurts me. I LOVE this colour green (its my favourite) and I have always said Rachael Mc Admas would play me in my life story, but this looks like someone needs to steam out those winkles right in the front. I expected more

The Best – Duh look at it. Thanks. Now lets move on.

The Bad (ish)- Cate seems to do no wrong at award show, I love the colour ( see my review of Rachael McAdams) but I am not sure of the craft flowers from Michaels.

And now for my pick for the Worst dress at the Oscars

tina fey amy oscars arrive 02

The Worst Dressed goes to this curtain, I mean dress that Amy Pohler decided to wear. Now I am sure this was super comfortable, but is was also super awful.

CcVwK3aUAAAd0CS.jpg-large

The best dressed- Saoirse Ronan looked amazing. I was not expecting her to hold her own in this gorgeous green (again my favourite colour )  grown. I probably won’t run out and see this movie any-time soon, but that dress was the winner

The Golden Globes

Published January 12, 2016 by lorimuma

So here it is, the 1st real award show of 2016. (sorry People Choice A list shows only)

Instead of bombarding my Facebook and twitter feed I thought that I would do a live blog post.

I was super excited for Ricky Gervais to host. Well he started off strong, the Sean Penn and Caitlyn Jenner joke were very funny, the rest of the monologue. meh. I have heard it before and the joke about putting a globe up his ass was a sad attempt to be edgy. You could have and have done way better Ricky.

Then something happened Jonah Hill for some reason feels that he is a comedian. I really don’t even understand why people think he is an actor, but whatever. He went on and on about the bear from his man crush Leo’s movie. He must have been sad that Leo didn’t pay anyone to put him in that movie, you know like all the past Leo movie’s that somehow Jonah Hill appears in.  Jane Fonda was having NONE OF IT. Like nothing.

CYZuLASWQAAmOlI

Total side question why is Katy Perry there, and why is she in the front table?

Kate Winslet wins for a movie I didn’t even know she was in and no one even saw, Jobs. She even seemed surprised. Sorry the movie is called Steve Jobs see I had no idea

J. Lo and The Rock, probably the best looking pair to ever present an award    appear and really I don’t care who they give the award to, as they are too good looking to turn your eyes from.

Some women wins for a show I have never seen and sooooo annoying that I will now never watch the show that she has just won for.

Ricky is back and does make a good Ben Affleck joke at Matt Damon’s expense.

OMG Star wars wins an award. Oh wait actually its Oscar Isaac for something that I have never heard of.

Lady Gaga (looking surprisingly elegant )and Tom Ford present an award to Christian Slater. Now that is a sentence that I never thought I would write.

Jamie Foxx presents and has the best “Steve Harvey I made a mistake”impression ever about not having Straight out of Compton nominated. Quentin Tarantino’s composer wins for The Hateful Eight and seems not to impressed with the joke.

Now Amy Schumer and her overly reported new “BFF” Jennifer Lawerence. They were as annoying as I thought it would be. Amy repurposed the same jokes for 100th time, yes I get it, your awkward, you swear and want to sleep with lots of men ( my eyes are currently rolling back) Jennifer also attempts to be funny..next.

Matt Damon wins for Best Actor in a Comedy for The Martin. That really is the only thing comedic about the thing. I could go on a rest about how much of an insult that is to actually comedies and comedians, but i have decided to move on.

Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt present together. Proving my motto that  I only want to see  really good looking people on TV. Add to it how funny they were and they could have stayed up the rest of the show.

CYaFwnwUEAAIlrZ

Now its time for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Movie and the winner is  Sylvester Stallone. For some reason this made me happy. I was glad to see finally someone win for creating a role that is iconic. It doesn’t matter if you like him or not. Way to go Rocky!

CYZ_HNjUsAArLtb

Some show called Mozart in the Jungle keeps winning in the comedy category. I have never heard of it and probably will never watch it.

So how crazy are the Golden Globes. They gave Lady Gaga an award for best actress in a drama. She rambled about how she wanted to act first not sing, but all anyone will remember is the Leo eye raise.

Horror story: Leonardo DiCaprio got spooked by Lady Gaga as she barged past him to collect her Golden Globe on Sunday night

Sam Smith wins for a song from James Bond that I have never heard  or never will

Something called Mr. Robot wins for Drama.

Ricky is back to introduce Mel Gibson.

CYaL0kXWcAQfCtg

“I would rather have a drink in a hotel room with Mel Gibson than Bill Cosby” Well done Ricky, well done

“What the fuck does sugar tits  even mean?” and I have now become interested in this show again.

Denzel gets an lifetime achievement award blah blah Jennifer Lawrence wins another for Joy. I really have no idea why but she does blah blah blah some more awards that make no sense at all. The Martin winning best comedy or musical. Please.

At least Taraji P Henson won for a show that people actually watch!

The movie about the kid in a room wins and then what everyone was waiting for Leo for the WIN.

Now best Movie – not a surprise here,  it is for the bear almost killed Leo in the Canadian Wilderness movie – The Revenant. Everyone acts surprised, I go to bed.

Now I wait for the Oscar nominations this Thursday

The Golden Globes – 6/10

Ricky Gervais as host 7/10

NKOTB – The Main Event. Concert Review

Published July 18, 2015 by lorimuma

Last week I was able to attend the NKOTB Main Event Tour. Now I have been very clear. I have an overall dislike for this band.
At 40 years old, apparently I should fit right into their fan base, but I don’t. I never at any point purchased, listened to, or remotely liked this band.

So it is to my surprise that for some reason I have seen this band 5 times (including when they opened for Tiffany back in 1988) How this has happened is hard to explain at this time.

So when I heard that I would attending “The Main Event” I was excited, only because one of my favorite bands from the 90’s was also on the tour –TLC. I was so looking forward to seeing them, minus the “L” (RIP Left Eye) as well as Nelly that having to watch NKOTB for one of the nights would be bearable. Watching them both night, not a chance.

For this post, I will only focus on the New Kid part of this show.

The whole theme of the was boxing, hence The Main Event. The stage was shaped like a ring at the centre of the stage and they entered like they were boxers entering the ring for the match.

They opened with a song called Block Party, at least that is what the set list said. I quickly realized that NKOTB use confetti like Beyoncé uses wind machines. At one point I wasn’t even sure a new kid was on stage. It was covered with confetti.

They crowed made up of about 95% women seemed to be enjoying themselves, so that was good. Joey and Donnie seemed to carrying the show vocally. I was just starting to think, even though I will never be a fan, I can see that they really play for the fans and everything seemed to be working. Until something happened. Something that left me speechless and slightly horrified.

The New Kid named Joey decided to do a rendition of the Eurythmics classic Sweet Dreams while all dressed in white, and dry humping the stage. It was horrible, possible one of the worst things I have seen in years on stage, and remember I have seen this band 5 times! I was slightly scared. Listen new kid, just because you can sing, it doesn’t mean the you should sing any song you want. Annie Lennox wherever you are, please never look this up on You Tube.

The New Kids went on to sing more, grind the stage more, thank Jesus more and blow extreme amounts of confetti out of the machines.

I left a few songs before the end but I got the feel for the show.

For some reason I am sure in my life I see this band for the 6th time.

Goodbye my little Friend

Published April 28, 2015 by lorimuma

Last week was a tough week. It was a really sad week for me. I had to say goodbye to a family member. She was 16.

Sixteen years ago my parents told me they were getting a dog. A Shih Tzu they named Mikayla. I was not a fan of dogs. I didn’t want to pet them, I didn’t want them to jump on me and I didn’t want them waking me up in the morning. I was convinced that my parents were having some sort of mid life crisis. I was not looking forward to this new “family” member at all.

Then we met. She was all of 3lbs and could fit into my hands. We stared at each other and she won me over in about 5 min. Miki as she was going to called melted my heart. I now would come home just to see her. Within days she became the diva of the house. We did what she wanted. When she wanted to sleep she did, when she wanted to go for a walk she did, when she wanted to bark at the neighbourhood squires my father drove her around so show she could.

Mikayla didn’t act like most dogs, she slept on pillows, not a dog bed. She only ate the best dog food, specially bought for her at the vets and it was severed on a plate, never a dog bowl. She wouldn’t have any of that nonsense. People made her customized one of kind dog coats and everyone knew her name on the street. She would try and kick guests out of the house when she grew tired of them. Really this is a thing she used to do. If you were in the house after 7:30, look out Miki would be at your feet telling you to go.

She grew to be a whole 8lbs but had the attitude of an 80lbs dog. Over the last year she started to slow down. Her hearing and sight had diminished and so did her appetite, but not her personality. I thought we had still had time with her.

I was visiting last weekend and she was slow, she slept most of time, but still knew I was home.

On Tuesday I got message from mom, Miki hadn’t been eating and had a rough night. They were taking her to the vet to see what to do. But I knew what they were going to do. It was that cold and and rainy morning that we all said goodbye to my little Miki.

Thank you Miki for everything that you gave us. I will miss you forever.

Ghostown

Published April 13, 2015 by lorimuma

First off, everyone knows that I would never not like this video, so I will admit I am completely bias and I don’t care.

I love this song, I love video and I love whole Madonna doesn’t give a shit how old she is vibe the most. The last part is for a whole other rant.

Ghostown is the second song off on Madonna’s “Rebel Heart” album. I think it is the best song overall on the album and probably should have been the first single.

Little know fact about this song, Madonna worked with Michael Keaton’s son on it. You know the one he when on and on about when he won the globe this year. Yep same guy.

The video is takes place after a nuclear bomb has destroyed most of the cool cities in the world. Madonna thinking she is alone, decides to channel Stevie Nicks and go outside and see what has happened.

While walking through the rubble she is noticed by a man, that man is Terrence Howard. At first he wants to kill her, but then they become mesmerized with each out and do what I would totally do in the same situation. Tango.

While this is going on, a young boy, that looks strangely like one of the Jolie-Pitt kids appears and taken under the wing of these two dancing rebels. Lucky kid.

Again Madonna delivers stylish video that I have already watched multiple times. I can’t wait to see her perform this in October.

Neil Diamond – Air Canada Centre Toronto

Published April 13, 2015 by lorimuma

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Neil Diamond concert at the ACC. Now I admit, I don’t know too much about Neil Diamond, I just knew that has a huge following and that jokes about “seas of grey” being all over the entire concert floor.

I spent 20 min with my friend Patricia trying to name a song other than Sweet Caroline, she rhymed of about 10 songs, while I could only remember a song about bringing flowers and something called “I am I am” I think . Turns out it called “I am. I said” and was a pretty big crowd pleaser when he sang it.

While working at the VIP event, I was talked to the attendees and was surprised that not only were they the nicest people I have ever dealt with at a concert, they had seen Neil multiple times, like eight, nine plus times. Some were well into the double digits. To my surprise I totally enjoyed this show. He is the constant performer and at 74 has maintained his voice.

Oh and take note Adam Levine, Neil spent a good 10 minutes introducing his band and he is a solo act. Neil sang and danced, well more like walked around the stage while pointing and holding his guitar over his head, but hey he is 74 and has a bad hip. At one point he bent down to kiss a fan in the front row. I was worried that he wasn’t going to be able to get back up.

He did and played for well over 2 hours without taking a break. Proving to this skeptic why he is still selling out areas.

Overall Neil delivered with the flare and showmanship that was lacking with Maroon 5. A well done show.

3.5 out of 5
